Great Expectations

I don't understand who The Avenging Phantom is. Why does he/she/it keep appearing throughout the book? Why did he/she/it come into the story in the first place. Also, what does he/she/it do to help the story? Pip will just be thinking about something and then The Avenging Phantom will say something and then go away until he/she/it feels like coming back into the story.

  1. The Avenging Phantom is Pip's servant. Pip hired him to do random chores that Pip assigns him to do. However, in chapters 38-39, Pip announces that he had moved, and did not take the Avenging Phantom with him.

  2. The Avenging Phantom(A.K.A. Pepper) is like Pip's "slave." He does housekeeping, runs errands for him, and wanders the hallways. His outfit is interesting, and the fact that Pip hires him shows how superficial he has become. Pip has to often find things for the Avenging to do. I just figured this out a couple chapters ago, so you are not the only one that was confused about him.
